Research forum “Regional Developments of International Law in Eastern Europe and Post-Soviet Eurasia” will be held in Tartu on 27 and 28 April

On 27 and 28 April, the research forum of the European Society of International Law (ESIL), “Regional Developments of International Law in Eastern Europe and Post-Soviet Eurasia” will be held in Tartu, organised by the Department of Public Law at the University of Tartu School of Law. The forum’s theme is highly relevant in the light of the region’s geopolitics.

The main organiser, Professor Lauri Mälksoo is pleased that crucial topics related to our region have received the attention of European international law scholars. “Since Russia’s actions, in terms of international law, have been so destructive, they need to be examined and interpreted in the light of international law,” he said. Therefore, researchers from many countries were invited to Tartu. “A notable feature of this year’s forum is that the participants include quite a number of young researchers who will be shaping the future of the field,” Mälksoo added.

Furthermore, there are many students of international law and human rights at the University of Tartu who find it exciting to be involved in organising an international event. “Our research group of international law is organising the research forum for the second time. The first was held at the Estonian Academy of Sciences in 2011. This time, we will get together in the main building of the University of Tartu,” Lauri Mälksoo said.

The forum participants are members of the European Society of International Law and young researchers of international law from Estonia, Latvia, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Poland, Kazakhstan, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, France, Australia, Turkey, Luxembourg and Italy.

The research forum is supported by the Estonian Research Council grant PRG969.
