Doctoral Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences
The centre ensures the conduct of doctoral studies in the faculty in compliance with the regulations in force. In addition to ensuring a smooth exchange of information, the centre helps by counselling doctoral candidates and supervisors on the organisation of doctoral studies, and by assisting with funding and with the selection of courses and training opportunities.
The purpose of doctoral studies is to prepare lecturers and researchers for universities and research institutions, as well as leading specialists outside the academic sphere. Doctoral studies are a research-based form of higher education at the highest level, during which the doctoral student acquires the competencies necessary for independent research and development work.

Organisation of doctoral studies at the faculty
Doctoral studies at the University of Tartu are regulated by the Regulations for Doctoral Studies (web version), which include general requirements for supervision, individual planning, assessment and application for a doctoral degree. Doctoral students should also get acquainted with good practices of the University of Tartu, especially with good practices of doctoral studies. Faculty level procedure regulates the progress reviews of doctoral students. The doctoral studies council of the Faculty of Social Sciences has developed guidelines and recommendations to help plan your studies and successfully defend your thesis. The awarding of the doctoral degree is regulated by the Additional Conditions for Awarding Doctoral Degrees in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Doctoral Studies Council
In addition to the Centre of Doctoral Studies, whose activities are primarily aimed at supporting doctoral students and supervisors, the faculty also has a Doctoral Studies Council, whose purpose is to manage the doctoral programmes of the faculty and their development.
The council consists of heads of doctoral specialisations, representatives of doctoral students, and the Vice Dean for Reasearch and Development of the faculty, who serves as the head of the council.
