The Centre for EU-Russia Studies (CEURUS) at the University of Tartu invites you to participate in a two-day conference “Russians and Russian Speakers in the Post-Soviet Space: Comparative Approaches” held on October 8-9, 2015 (venue: University Café, Ülikooli 20, 2nd floor). The conference brings together specialists with expertise in numerous national contexts (Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, the Caucasus, the Baltic states, Russia) to discuss several interrelated topics, including:

The first academic week of the University of Tartu’s International Summer University has begun and for the first time in the summer university’s history, the developments of e–Estonia, cyber security and e–democracy are among the topics introduced. The summer university brings 215 learners from 30 countries to Tartu, making the town a centre of multicultural education for the week.

The university reputation survey by TNS Emor assured that, for already the seventh year, the most reputable university in Estonia is the University of Tartu. UT was valued the highest by young people aged 15–19. The high level of education at the University of Tartu and the diploma’s value in the labour market were valued the most.

Researchers of the Institute of Social Studies of the University of Tartu participated in the survey Children’s Worlds which studied children’s subjective wellbeing and involved 50,000 children all over the world. The results indicate that compared to the children of other countries, Estonian children are rather satisfied with their time use and friendships, but more critical of how their parents take into account what children say. Moreover, Estonian children are the most critical of school.

The international consultation company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) published its QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015, which ranks the world’s universities in 36 subjects. The University of Tartu is represented in the ranking list with five subjects. The UT has the highest position in communication and media studies (101–150), in which it is ranked for the third year already. This is followed by philosophy (151–200), English language and literature (201–250), modern languages (251–300) and medicine (301–350).

On 22 April at 10:15–12:00 at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education, Lossi 36, room 214 Yoshiko M. Herrera, Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will give a public lecture entitled „Pride versus Prejudice: Ethnicity, National Identity, and Xenophobia in Russia”. Everybody is welcome to attend!

On 22 and 23 April, the UT Faculty of Economics and Business Administration hosts one of the best-known researchers in social accounting, Professor Robert Hugh Gray from the University of St Andrews, Scotland. In his presentations, he will speak about the developments in social responsibility and sustainability as well as the advantages and disadvantages of qualitative and quantitative methods.

The two-day seminar “Critical Perspectives and critical Dimensions on the ongoing Ukrainian Crisis: Which systemic Challenges to the EU-Russia dialogue?” is organized by the European College of the University of Tartu in cooperation with "Platform Ukraine", a multidisciplinary project based at the School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies (SSEES), University College London.

Eight e-courses created at the University of Tartu were submitted to the contest “E-course quality label 2015”. Seven of them were considered worthy of the quality label. In total, 40 e-courses of different higher education institutions, vocational schools and general education schools were submitted for evaluation, 23 of which received the quality label. The quality label was awarded to the following e-courses of the University of Tartu:

Cambridge University Press has just released the research monograph Transitional and Retrospective Justice in the Baltic States by Dr. Eva-Clarita Pettai and Prof. Vello Pettai. It is the first book that focuses on transitional justice issues in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania from a comparative perspective.

Free movement of workers and the wish to improve their family’s financial well‑being makes many people living in Estonia look for a job abroad. A study by the UT Centre for Applied Social Sciences (CASS) reveals that despite the better standard of living, the child who is left behind in Estonia may feel left alone and end up in a bad company, which in the worst cases may lead to poor achievement at school and the violation law.

At the end of 2014, the University of Tartu Press published the Russian-language version of the monograph A History of the Baltic States by Professor of Baltic Politics Andres Kasekamp. Kasekamp considers the distribution of the book in Russia a great challenge.

Every year in December, the university recognises our best teaching staff, programme directors of the year and gives out the the award for improving the quality of teaching. Best teaching staff of 2014: Humaniora Viljandi Culture Academy, Lecturer in Adventure Education SERGEI DRÕGIN

The international education portal Scientix recognised the University of Tartu and the Estonian Nanotechnology Competence Centre for creating the teaching material “What is light?” for the project “Quantum Spin-Off – connecting schools with high-tech research and entrepreneurship”.

On November 4th, the multinational research network EU Kids Online published the interactive final report of the research project carried out in 2006–2014. In the project focussed on the opportunities and risks related to children’s internet use, Estonia is represented by the Institute of Social Studies of the University of Tartu.
