While Estonian children have previously shown a rather risky online behaviour, a new study classifies them as fairly smart internet users among European peers.

On 2 September, 14,092 new students start their studies at the University of Tartu in its 101st academic year as Estonia’s national university. The opening ceremony of the academic year is held in the afternoon at Kassitoome in a more relaxed atmosphere than usual. Photo exhibition “Faces of the University III” is opened on the wall of Von Bock House with a humorous play by Mart Kivastik.

Economic expert and entrepreneur Ott Pärna took up the position of Head of Marketing of University of Tartu Delta Centre on 1 October. Erik Puura, UT Vice-Rector for Development, says that the university offered the position of Marketing Director to Pärna to build up and develop the entrepreneurial image of the university.

Professor emeritus of public law and legal philosophy at Kiel University, renowned German legal philosopher and constitutionalist Robert Alexy will deliver a lecture on the topic of Constitutional Rights, Proportionality and Argumentation in the Assembly Hall of the University of Tartu from 12:15 to 14:00 on 10 December.

At the ceremony dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Estonia’s national university, the University of Tartu’s first scholarship for visiting professors from the Estonian Diaspora was presented to David Ilmar Lepasaar Beecher, a lecturer of history and global studies at the University of California, Berkeley. David Ilmar Lepasaar Beecher is a historian and social scientist of Estonian descent, a lecturer with nearly 20 years of teaching, supervising and curricula development experience from the universities of the United States of America and Europe.

Deputy Head for Academic Affairs of the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies Olga Bogdanova received the recognition for the development of the cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the University of Tartu and for the contribution to strengthening the capability of the foreign service of Estonia. At the 101st birthday ceremony of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, decorations were awarded to the entrepreneurs, experts and social figures who have helped shaped the foreign policy of Estonia.

Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies of the University of Tartu received the ERA Chair grant of 2.5 million euros from the European Union to develop a world-leading research team on e-governance, public e-services and to advance e-governance innovation in Estonia.

The Institute of Social Sciences is hosting a guest lecture "Humanization of Economy" by Professor René Kemp. He is well-known for his work on strategic niche management, sociotechnical regime shifts and transition management. He has a background in (environmental) economics and innovation studies and is a self-taught expert on the sociology of knowledge, public policy and political economy. Professor Kemp will give a lecture "humanization of Economy" on November 7 at 16:15 (Lossi 36-215). The visit is supported by SEB bank.

Scientists of the University of Tartu, visiting lecturer of IT Law at the Faculty of Law Tõnu Mets and Head of the Working Group on Information Security of the Institute of Computer Science Arnis Paršovs found a problem related to giving, validating and the effectiveness of digital signatures.

On 22 October 2019 the electoral councils elected new deans for the University of Tartu’s four faculties. Raul Eamets, who was supported by 176 members of the electoral council, will continue as the dean of the Faculty of social Sciences.

In May this year, a network of procurement practitioners in the field of security was established in the course of iProcureNet project. The European Commission-funded network aims to create conditions for and facilitate cross-border joint procurement of internal security products and services. Estonia is represented in the network by the Police and Border Guard Board and the University of Tartu as the only academic partner.

Today, on 2 October, the election committee approved the candidates for the deans of all the four faculties.

On the 27–29th of August, the International Society for Child Indicators (ISCI) will be holding their annual conference in Tartu. Head of the organizing committee Dagmar Kutsar from the University of Tartu says that what makes the conference special is the symbiosis of scientists, practitioners and policymakers who come together for one goal – to find better ways to increase child well-being.

The University of Tartu and Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies are honoured to host a guest lecture by Prof Margaret Levi, a world renowned political scientist whose work is concentrated on relations between the state and its citizens, on Tuesday, 24th of September.

The Times Higher Education (THE), which is considered the world’s most reputable compiler of university rankings, has published the most recent ranking of the best universities. In the 2019 ranking the University of Tartu continues in the 301st–350th band, while the results of European universities in general show a downward trend.

On Thursday 1 August at 15:00 p.m., the University of Tartu’s Centre for Entrepreneurship celebrated the completion of the first construction stage. “I am very pleased that construction has so far gone as planned and stayed on schedule,” said Heiki Pagel, Head of the Real Estate Department of the university. “In order to recognise the constructors for achieving the maximum height of the building, we invited the future tenants of the building and all the constructors to the celebration of the completion of the first construction stage.”

On Monday the University of Tartu sent admission decisions to 2,850 people who had applied for Estonian-taught programmes of the first level of higher education. Now they have to confirm acceptance of the student place within two days, i.e. no later than Wednesday, 17 July. Student places that remain vacant will be filled on a rolling basis until 19 August and those who get the admission decision will also need to confirm it within two days.

More than 40 PhD students gathered in Tartu for ECREA (European Communication Researchers and Education Association) summer school from 9th till 16th July. The aim of the summer school is to give young researchers an opportunity to debate contemporary issues in media, communication and cultural studies.
