Today, 20 June, the Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities (ACEEU) awarded the University of Tartu international entrepreneurial university accreditation. In recent years the University of Tartu (UT) has made a conscious effort to advance entrepreneurship studies and establish partnerships with companies and other organisations in order to promote a knowledge-based and innovative society.

On 14 June, the proposal writing workshop “SpaceTEM – Space will fund you” will take place in Tartu, aiming to develop project proposal writing skills, find partners for future projects and strengthen networks in the space industry of Estonia and Latvia. The focus of the event is on writing proposals in the space sector (IT, physics, chemistry, astronomy, materials, etc.). However, the workshop will also be useful for the general audience interested in Horizon2020, Interreg and national funding schemes.

On Thursday, 11 April at 14:30, the President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis will deliver a public speech in the Assembly Hall of the University of Tartu. The event is open to everyone. Even though the state visit schedule of the Head of Latvia is tight, he wishes to address the public with a speech „Defending our freedoms – the role of knowledge“. Everyone from university students and employees to the citizens of Tartu and other interested parties is welcome to attend.

On 19 March, an interactive seminar on innovative learning methods was conducted by the University of Tartu Idea Lab at the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science in Kyiv, with the audience comprising nearly 200 lecturers of universities all over Ukraine. The seminar was organised in collaboration with the Ukrainian partner organisation.

UT IdeaLab invites teams with early-stage startup ideas to apply for the NGAL®international business development programme taking place from 2–14 June in Tartu, Tallinn and Charleston, USA. Application deadline is 24 March.

On Friday, 22 February at 12 o'clock, a concert ceremony is held at the university assembly hall to celebrate the 101st anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, award the stipendees of the Ernst Jaakson and Peeter Tulviste memorial scholarships and present the UT's badges of distinction. Ernst Jaakson's memorial scholarship that supports UT PhD students, research fellows and teaching staff abroad is awarded at the concert. Ernst Jaakson's scholarship is the largest known privately funded scholarship to be awarded to students and research fellows.

The highest ranking subject at University of Tartu (UT) was political sciences and international studies (101–150). This year two new University of Tartu social sciences subjects have entered the rankings of consulting firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) – education ranked in the top 251–300 and business and management in the top 401–450.

On Thursday, 7 March, retired Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, former Commander of the U.S. Army in Europe, will give a lecture „The Contemporary Security Challenges Facing Europe” in the main building of University of Tartu.

On Thursday, February 28, 2019, the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences and the University of Tartu signed a contract with the construction company Nordecon for the construction of a Narva Learning Center. Besides the cadets, also the staff of the Police and Border Guard Board, as well as the students of Narva College of the University of Tartu, will start using the study, training and accommodation building. In addition, the construction will include a sports complex with a swimming pool, which is also open to the public.

The opening assembly of the University of Tartu of the Republic of Estonia on 1 December 1919 marked the establishment of an Estonian-language university that was above all designed for Estonian students and to serve Estonian society. The centenary of the national university is celebrated throughout the year with a nation-wide cultural programme, an opinion festival and the largest gathering of alumni to date. The anniversary year draws to a close in December.

On 15 January, the new academic and research building of the Institute of Sport Sciences and Physiotherapy of the University of Tartu and the sports complex extension were officially opened. The total cost of the works exceeded 10 million euros. According to Priit Kaasik, Head of the Institute of Sport Sciences and Physiotherapy, the new building offers improved conditions for teaching physiotherapy and training coaches and physical education teachers. There are also rooms for research.

Based on students’ feedback, UT’s 2018 lecturers of the year are Reet Alas, a French teacher at the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures of the Faculty of Humanities and Arts, Kristel Ruutmets, an entry level English teacher at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Joel Starkopf, a Professor of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at the Faculty of Medicine and Edith Viirlaid, an Assistant in Colloidal and Environmental Chemistry at the Faculty of Science and Technology.

On Saturday, 1 December, the University of Tartu celebrates the 99th anniversary of the Estonian national university. At the anniversary ceremony, doctorates and honorary doctorates are conferred and the award for contribution to national identity is presented. During the week, many fascinating anniversary events take place at the university – for students, alumni and all those interested.

The council of the School of Law elected Professor in Social Law, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Social Sciences Gaabriel Tavits as the Director of the School of Law. The new director will assume the position on 1 January 2019, after the expiry of the term of office of current director Peep Pruks. “The School of Law of the University of Tartu will continue development in the same direction – high-quality legal education at all three levels of study and high-level research,” says the future director Gaabriel Tavits.

The specialities of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Tartu rose to high positions in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) university rankings by subject.

The Study Department of the University of Tartu opened the doors on the new offices of its Counselling Centre to students at all levels of study this week. The centre is now based in the university’s library. The counsellors at the centre help students think about their studies and careers and draw up a personal development plan to enhance their skills and knowledge.
