The University of Tartu International Summer University programme brings participants from Europe and the USA to study in Estonia. This time learners also include participants from various Asian countries—the Philippines, China, India, Iran, Japan and South-Korea. Popular courses address Lotman’s semiotics of culture and analyse the current political situation.

It is only a matter of time before the winners of the UT business and project idea competition Kaleidoskoop, the creators of the website Konku for rental ads without estate agents fee, will target the US market. The students, who participated in the international programme Network Globally, Act Locally, stood out in the US and won second place and 2,000 USD to implement their idea.

The First Annual Tartu Conference on Russian and East European Studies taking place from 12 to 14 June brings nearly 200 researchers and experts from around the world to Tartu to introduce the most recent research work in the field and discuss topical subjects, such as political and economic developments, culture and society in East Europe.

Airbnb, PayPal and Bitcoin are only some of the most common examples of where today’s market is headed. The current market is built on new platform-based contracts, the use of which raises questions regarding the finalisation of the contracts and consumer rights.

Three University of Tartu Idea Lab teams were chosen for the international Network Globally, Act Locally programme to develop their business ideas. The programme begins today in Tartu, where the entrepreneurial youth from two USA universities have also arrived, and ends on 24 June in Nebraska, USA, where teams will present their business ideas to the local business people.

Professor Emeritus at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies Rein Taagepera receives Karl Deutsch Award from the International Political Science Association (IPSA). As an award recipient, he is invited to the IPSA World Congress to present a prize lecture on July, 27 2016.

On 9 December 2016, at the University of Tartu’s initiative, the international business conference sTARTUp Day takes place in Estonia for the first time. Around a thousand guests from Estonia and abroad are expected to come and enjoy an eventful day with renowned performers from around the world. Registration and ticket sales have begun.

The winner of the University of Tartu business and project idea competition Kaleidoskoop was team Konku, whose web and mobile application (www.konku.ee) provides rental ads without estate agent fees. The winning team has kept in mind people looking for a home and apartment owners and uses a very personal approach in both cases.

On 27 May 2016, fifteen teams compete in the University of Tartu business and project idea competition Kaleidoskoop to find the business ideas with the greatest potential and implement them with the help of development advisors. Ideas competing in the finals range from catering and computer games to new materials. The 15 finalists were selected from among 28 teams who represented the University of Tartu, Tartu Vocational Education Centre, Tartu College of Tallinn University of Technology, Tartu Art School and Hugo Treffner Gymnasium.

Conference takes place on May 26 at Nordic Hotel Forum, Tallinn. ICT has become an inseparable part of our everyday lives both in personal and professional sphere. Technology both challenges and advances all business sectors. Legal sector is not untouchable to the effect of ICTs. However, it is more conservative than many other fields of consultation business as lawyers seem to be less inviting regarding change to their billable-hour-oriented business models.

A student of the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies, American Alina Clay received a scholarship from the US Department of State that trains students to become diplomats. Clay considers her experience-rich time at UT an important factor in receiving one of the most reputable scholarships in the US.

The university reputation survey by TNS Emor assured that, for already the eighth year, the most reputable university in Estonia is the University of Tartu. The recent survey outlines the attitudes of young people regarding UT: 15–19-year-olds, the current and future applicants, valued highly the university’s success and quality of education.

On 28 April at 16 at the UT Centre of Educational Innovation (Lossi 38–229), lecture “Innovative Tool to Measure Analytics on Teaching & Learning Automatically, Objectively and in Real-Time” is held by Professor Izhar Haq of the University of Oxford who has worked in universities in Great Britain, Canada, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan. 2,279 applications were submitted to the UT’s 19 English-taught bachelor’s and master’s curricula and the integrated curriculum of Medicine. Similarly to previous year, most applications were submitted for IT specialisations: the Computer Science programme received 242 applications from international candidates and 40 from Estonian candidates and the programme of Software Engineering had 277 and 41 applications respectively.

Estonia lacks researchers who work on legal problems in the field of finance on the presumed level of a research university. The European Banking Institute (EBI) supports the development of this field and experts in Estonia, because the network brings together the competence of institutions that study and carry out research on the problems of EU financial and supervisory authorities. Through the UT School of Law, the University of Tartu has been named a founding member and academic member of the EBI.

UT researchers Associate Professor Aleksei Kelli and Professor Kadri Ukrainski, together with partners from Ukraine, organised a seminar in Ukraine on 12 April entitled “Research Organizations and Universities Knowledge Transfer in Ukraine: The Improvement of the Policy and Mechanisms in Ukraine, based on EU Experience“.

From the six works submitted, the University of Tartu chose the architectural solution called ICONICUM for the IT centre to be built on Narva road. The authors of the idea will be revealed on 19 April 2016 at 15:00 in the University Café, when the envelopes with the name cards of the winning project will be opened.

It is possible to apply for the English-taught master’s curricula at the UT Faculty of Arts and Humanities and Faculty of Social Sciences, the integrated curriculum of Medicine and the Faculty of Science and Technology’s bachelor’s curriculum Science and Technology until midnight on Friday, 15 April. Admission to the master’s curricula of the Faculty of Science and Technology has already ended.

“E-voting in Estonia: Technological Diffusion and Other Developments Over Ten Years (2005–2015)”, a book published in cooperation of the University of Tartu and the Estonian National Electoral Committee, is one of a kind and analyses the changes in participation in e-elections during a ten-year period, the behavioural aspects of e-voting and its social and political impact.
